For a bit over a year now The Backlot Perth has been hosting intimate gigs with some of Australia’s best artists for their Up Close And Personal series. These shows, held in The Backlot’s 50-seat theatre, give fans an opportunity to experience the artists’ music up close and hear about their work and lives along the way in a Q&A session as part of the performance. There’s also an opportunity to meet and greet artists after the show.
Having hosted the likes of Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse, Dave Graney, Nick Sheppard, Katy Steele, Davey Lane and Dom Mariani, on 24 October Perth’s very own superstar, Abbe May will be bringing her music and life to The Backlot.
“We’re really excited to be hosting Abbe May at The Backlot,” said Andrew Thompson from Around The Sound. “All of these shows are really special, but we’ve been after booking Abbe for a while now, as we know this one is going to be something else! I had the chance to review one of her shows at The Rosemount a while ago and was mesmerised. It moved me to write this:
Abbe May is a bit of an enigma. Somehow, she can be both aloof and close to her audience. She’s the sort of performer who notches up the air pressure in a room just by walking on stage. You know she’s there even if you’re not looking. And she’s got the songs and performance capability to back it all up.
“Also, if you follow Abbe on her social media, you’ll know she’s one of the deepest, funniest and most empathetic human beings on the planet.
“This show is going to be a riot of song and conversation, and the chance for fans to get to meet Abbe in the Backlot’s bar after the show is an opportunity not to be missed!”

Abbe May spent her late teens and early twenties performing in Australia’s most notorious rock venues and busted up studios, touring relentlessly in unreliable tour vans in various solo and band incarnations. With sly humour, Abbe graduated from her critically acclaimed early explorations of rock and blues to become a guitar-slinging, beat-driven, iconic performer with an atmospheric cocktail of sexy, indie riff-rock, gospel, soul and electronica.
Abbe is one of the strong women of the Australian music industry with much respect across radio, blogs and venues around the country. She is an ARIA, WAM, AIR, AMP winning and nominated artist, the hand-picked guitarist for Peter Garrett’s Alter Egos and a champion of the LGBTQIA+ community. A constantly evolving artist, she has performed at a myriad of summer music festivals including Big Day Out, Meredith, and Pyramid, and supported Neneh Cherry, The Black Keys, Midnight Oil, The Motels, Art V’s Science, Tim Rogers, Adalita, Magic Dirt, Emiliana Torrini, Killing Heidi, You Am I, Peter Garrett, Bob Log III, Kim Salmon, Dave Graney and Claire Moore.
Abbe has had huge success with ‘Design Desire’ in 2012, and ‘Kiss My Apocalypse’ in 2013. Associated singles Mammalian Locomotion, Taurus Chorus, Design Desire, Karmageddon, and T.R.O.U.B.L.E were huge hits after all being added to high rotation on Triple J. Her Like A Version of Ginuwine’s Pony is still widely considered a classic. Several of her songs have been used in worldwide marketing campaigns for Jagermeister as well as featuring in HBO’s Entourage and Jane Campion’s Top Of The Lake.
Abbe is known as a phenomenal singer, songwriter and guitarist, a poetic, insightful, hard-hitting lyricist, performer and visual artist who harnesses and openly expresses her sexuality without shame. She spent the past four years creating her fifth studio album “FRUIT”, released on February 2, 2018, and it is her most succinct and powerful declaration of identity yet. A melodic, upbeat and soulful collection of songs made to honour the lives of those who don’t quite know how to stand in line.
This is an intimate evening of music and conversation that is not to be missed.
