New Zealand Māori artist, TEEKS (Te Karehana Gardiner-Toi) has shared his latest II EP out now via Sony Music. The sophomore release arrives ahead of the singer-songwriter’s sold-out debut headline New Zealand tour.
Four tracks that speak to the hidden delicacies of love and its rapturous heartaches, “Into You” opens II EP with a guitar-plucked ballad that fast reminds us of the gravelly depths of TEEKS’ endlessly impressive vocals. The following, “If You Were Mine” is a fast-tempoed and pop-centric song with a steady backbeat that sees TEEKS yearn to fulfil his love interest’s fantasies. Next, “Here Before” is a cosmic and soulful release that croons and begs for forgiveness in TEEKS’ uniquely harmonic world, to the backdrop of softly strummed guitar. Final track, and previous single “Remember Me” moves from gentle questions of a longing heart, to soaring anthem, beautifully crafted to capture the essence of intimacy in 2020. Accompanied by an emotionally intricate video, the release’s stunning visual was shot in Auckland, New Zealand and led by a Māori-led crew, including producer Mia, Henry-Teirney and co-director, Ray Edwards.
TEEKS will premiere his second EP live on the road, when he invites fans across New Zealand to his debut headlining The Invitation Tour this December.
Set in some of the country’s most beautiful and naturally ambient venues, tickets sold out at an unprecedented speed. TEEKS will perform accompanied by the acclaimed Black Quartet and Nick Dow on piano in five historic venues, before a final in his hometown, Hokianga. Marking just the beginning for his highly anticipated live shows, TEEKS offers up an intimate audience experience, showcasing rare levels of vulnerability in performances that vibrate with intensity and are punctuated with deeply relatable moments of meaning.
TEEKS first emerged to widespread acclaim in 2017 with his debut EP, The Grapefruit Skies. A concise exploration of love and loss, as rendered through the naivety of youth and a soulful musical vocabulary informed by music across generations, TEEKS captivated audiences across New Zealand, Australia and the United Kingdom for the next two years, while collecting several prestigious local music awards and nominations, most notably Best Māori Artist at the Vodafone New Zealand Music Awards. He soon returned to the studio for an introspective period of hard-won personal and artistic growth, culminating in a complete surrender to emotion, the rejection of colonised masculinity, and the duality of Te Ao Māori: the worldview of his indigenous people. Growing up surrounded by music and performance, his infectious mindset has seen adoration from the likes of Vogue, MTV UK, Sniffers, community radio and more.
Discover the dreamlike world of TEEKS today, where negative space and atmospheric highs define bold songwriting to ensure his newest II EP is one fit for repeat over and over.
