DREAMS, FALSE MEMORIES AND BOJACK HORSEMAN

Perth’s very own femme powerhouse, Tether, are clawing their way to the top with their ruthless new single, ‘Heartless‘, which boasts a high-calibre emulsion of brooding electronica and incendiary rock.

This track starts with the fire set low, simmering through melancholic melodies, building and begging to unleash, finally boiling over into a frenzy of gritty guitars and unhinged vocals.

In order to get to the heart of this piece (ha ha) I had to get beneath the skin of Tether’s drummer, Caitlin Norris. We talked dreams, false memories and, well…Bojack Horseman.

The origin of this single is as complex as its multi-layered production Norris explains with her charming loquacity.

“’Heartless’ was written over the course of a few years, the chorus was only finished maybe late last year.  It’s a super weird one lyrically. The first verse was inspired by a Bojack Horseman episode where Bojack’s grandmother is forced to have a lobotomy because she’s too emotional. I was very moved by the whole episode, so I decided to try and write from her perspective which is ridiculous because she’s a fictional horse lady, but that’s where Heartless began.”

The song then evolved from a late-night Netflix binge to an exploration of Caitlin’s own fixation on memories and past lives.

“Sometimes I feel like I have false memories that aren’t mine or sometimes I remember the way I thought things would turn out. I have this whole constructed memory of something that never eventuated, but I find comfort in going back there mentally and kind of living with it.”

Its cathartic eruption is owed, like many of Tether’s songs, to the breakdown of a relationship that Norris “felt a lot of guilt in, during and after…I sort of spiralled after this person cut me out of their life.”

In order to channel that rawness, Norris coyly admits to having Tether’s lead vocalist and band-prescribed cowboy, Codie Sundstrom, lay on the floor and record the outro over and over, “until she had that country twang. She really is a good sad cowboy…I don’t know why she puts up with me.”

Heartless is Tether’s third and final single ahead of their debut EP set to be released at the end of this year. “This track is Tether’s version of a banger.” Norris quips, quickly recovering from her colloquialism, “I think heartless is kind of a combination of everything we’ve released so far, and it’s indicative of what’s to come. Empty Spaces felt like our dancier, electronically driven side and The Knife has those heavy, angry influences coming through. Heartless sort of combines the two. It’s emotional, dramatic and honest, just like the kind of music we all really relate to. We want our music to resonate with people in the same way our influences have resonated with us.”

You can find Heartless streaming on all platforms. Catch Tether supporting New Zealand’s, The Beths at Badlands Bar on October 12th.
