EASTER EGG

King Ibis
King Ibis

On stage, King Ibis are a band that works beautifully, even though maybe they shouldn’t.  At their core is a counterpoint between the dreamy vocals of Nadene Burchell and Matt Oakley’s guitar work which, when it kicks, is like the Easter egg inside your favourite video game, a surprise you were always hoping for but thought you may never find.

“We want to make music that connects with people, for it to mean something to other people as well as us and to make music that’s true.”

There’s a lot to like about King Ibis.  We’re not sure if they’re destined for greatness, there are many variables there that can’t be controlled, but if greatness were decided on musical talent alone, King Ibis might just climb that ladder in the future.  They were just nominated in the Folk category for Song of the Year, so they’re already taken the first step.

For Burchell, King Ibis is all about the music:  “We want to make music that connects with people, for it to mean something to other people as well as us and to make music that’s true.  Lyrically, it has to resonate with me.  You grow as a person and so you want to write some new things.”

And that’s the point, there’s a lot of growth left in this band, they’re really only just starting out, but they’re definitely one to watch out for.  They’re at the stage where punters are turning up to their gigs instead of just family and friends.  As Samantha Goddard (Bass) said, “Early on we played a gig to my Mum, my boyfriend and this random drunk guy who kept heckling us.  It’s quite interesting now, because we get people who just come for the band and don’t know us at all.  It’s like, ‘Whoa!’.”

King Ibis are set to launch their EP, Find Me On The Roof on 3 August at The Aardvark.  They’ll probably have some family and friends there, but they’ll save room for you, too.
