EPHEMERAL ETHEREAL ETERNAL

By the end of ‘For You’ Charlie Wilde is just about screaming the closing lines, You’re no one / You’re someone, over and over.  It’s a powerful closing to the second song in this dual single release that Wilde describes as “the ‘Antithesis’ project,” comprising the aforementioned ‘For You’ and ‘Antithesis’, which together Wilde says are about, “tackling anxiety on a day to day basis.”

It’s a cruel thought, but, Wilde’s music is so good that we hope he doesn’t manage to fully integrate this life lesson before he’s produced some more music driven by his wonderful self absorption.

Charlie Wilde is an artist who has snuck up on us here at Around The Sound.  We first spoke to him in advance of one of the Beyond The Verge events he and his cohort of earnest young music moguls organise.  Then we heard the music and, through his work saw what a rich vein of talent this still emerging artist has.  He quickly became a firm favourite and remains so.

Speak to Wilde, the alter ego of Aidan Ziccone, and you get pulled into his world of emotional complexity, uncertainty and yearning for love.  This is an artist and man who is completely unafraid to wear his heart on his sleeve.  His lexicon is a refreshing change from the stream of ‘dudes’, ‘bros’ and ‘mans’ that seems to be de rigueur for male musicians of a certain age these days.  While he’s the embodiment of 21st Century masculinity, Charlie Wilde is certainly no macho bullshit artist.

The most striking aspect of Charlie Wilde’s music is his voice.  It carries along melodies that are ephemeral, ethereal, yet somehow eternal.

‘Antithesis’ opens with a steely guitar that is both restrained and over the red line.  Once Wilde’s voice kicks in the music is transporting.  It’s the melodic equivalent of a summer meadow, pollen floating through rays of gentle sunshine, all seen through a delicate muslin veil.  There’s not a single drum in earshot, no bass, just vocals and guitar, and yet the sound is full and compelling.

‘Antithesis’ is a plea that will inevitably draw a response from you.  What that is lies inside you, but the music will find a way into your heart and guide you out of, or into, whatever shadows live inside.  It’s about those half moments of flashing insight, shimmering, just out of reach.  Close your eyes and listen and the impossible may just feel possible again.

‘For You’ is a continuation of the vocal and guitar ethic that Wilde explores on ‘Antithesis’.  Before he builds to the scream, Wilde sings, This is not it yet / This is not your loss.  If he’s singing about anxiety, this is the call we all have, some of us daily, when we’re gripped with the fear of being incomplete, never reaching what we sense is just beyond us.  No matter how high the peak you climb, there’s always another one ahead, shrouded with the unknown.

‘For You’ is about the eternal dialectic of existence.  Once you know you can be both no one and someone at the same time, things begin to make sense and anxiety takes its place alongside everything else that makes us human.

It’s a cruel thought, but, Wilde’s music is so good that we hope he doesn’t manage to fully integrate this life lesson before he’s produced some more music driven by his wonderful self absorption.

‘Antithesis’ and ‘For You’ are released on 25 May on all digital platforms.
