Mystical Northern Rivers group Family Jordan have returned with their new single ‘Stillness’ – the third offering from their upcoming album Big Grass out March 12 on Holiday Maker Records.
Meditating on unrequited love, “Pink is the colour of unconditional love, and I’ve been wearing pink for too long,” ‘Stillness’ is a rolling and contemplative cross-section of the narrator’s subconscious.
The song is at the thematic centrepoint of the band’s new album and showcases the maturity and dynamism of the group’s lead songwriting team of Jordan Rochfort and Samuel Joseph, with Rochfort’s languid vocals held up by Joseph’s delicate pedal steel work.
‘Stillness’ recalls the sound of Nashville Skyline-era Bob Dylan and Harvest-era Neil Young, similar to the likes of Kevin Morby, Dave Rawlings and Drugdealer. The song also pays homage to friend and contemporary Gabriella Cohen’s critically acclaimed 2018 album Pink is the Colour of Unconditional Love.
The group’s previous two singles ‘Big Grass’ and ‘Sally’ achieved national radio play with Double J, PBS, Triple R, 2Ser, 4ZZZ and more, and both singles were added to high rotation on ABC Country, with ‘Sally’ debuting in the national country charts at #40, as well as reaching #6 for roots and #10 for rock in the Triple J Unearthed charts.
From their cosmic country beginnings in Super Nobody Group from Nowhere (2015) and Holy Smokes (2018), and the profound, intimate balladry of Homo Exotica (2019), the homegrown sound of Big Grass solidifies the band as one of the forerunners in timeless alt-country/folk music in Australia.
Produced by Jordan Rochfort and co-produced/mixed by Samuel Joseph (King Gizzard, Babe Rainbow and Stonefield), and mastered by Mikey Young, Big Grass is Family Jordan’s most ambitious and distinctive release to date.
The album marks the first physical release on Holiday Maker Records – HMR001. Link to album pre-order here.
