FIVE ACT FRIDAY!
Every Friday, Around The Sound fishes out the best new or obscure WA artists and puts them under the magnifying glass.
Give them a listen, given them a ‘follow’ and get down to their gigs!
By Ben Pattison and Andrew Thompson.
Week 1: 22 February 2019
Act: Camomile Queen
Vibes: Blissed out indie pop.
Lowdown: While their name may imply they’d go hand in hand with your mum’s new Sealy, these guys are producing energetic, easy-going indie pop. Decent range on the singer. Groovy bass lines.
For Fans of: Vampire Weekend, San Cisco,
Act: Turtle Bay Television
Vibes: Alt Stoner Nerd Pop
Lowdown: An 8-piece indie orchestra making tunes about pretending to be the Designated Driver as your Happy Meds can’t be mixed with spliff or booze. Last year’s track ‘Martyrs’ sounds like Bowie crossed with Peter Garret and boasts a brass section, hair-metal guitar solos and a wicked beat. The songwriter has that kinda warped perspective you look for in a bruised poet.
For Fans of: The Cribs, Hockey Dad,

Act: Sad Hour
Vibes: Blitzkrieg Pop
Lowdown: ‘Kids Are getting Old’ is a strange beast of tune, halfway between George Ezra (but not as annoying) and early Swim Deep. Decent vocals here and they share it around – very raw recordings at this stage but they seem to have a flair for generating catchy melodies. Optimise the lyrical fodder and Sheppard might have to watch out!
For Fans of: George Ezra, The Lumineers
Vibes: Rock n Roll – yeah, Rock n Roll.
Lowdown: Layabout Rock for mass consumption – when they tighten up the arrangements and convince themselves they fully know how to a write a chorus, they’ll be a force to be reckoned with.
For Fans of: 90s US Alt Rock., Violent Soho, Nirvana etc
Act: The Gusset
Vibes: Indie Surf Rock / Surf Funk
Lowdown: Unashamedly borderline Ocean Alley plagiarists that sound like summer flings and road trips Down South. Very Formulaic, but just like Omo: it’s a winning formula. So much so, in fact, that they sold out the 250 capacity Indie bar in Scarbs (where else) the other month! These boys seem to have adhered to the old adage “if you’re gonna do something, do it well” and with the right strings pulled and the right originality pumped into the package, they’ll go far.
For Fans of: Ocean Alley, Sticky Fingers, Great Gable
