Foreign Architects to launch EP ‘Coasters and Caravans’; new single ‘High Street’
After a steady but rewarding build from singles Talk To A Scientist and Saw Myself, along with hitting the live circuit hard over the last six months, the release of Foreign Architects’ new EP Coasters and Caravans marks a definitive chapter in the Perth band’s unfolding story.
Fittingly titled, Coasters and Caravans reflects the London setting in which vocalist Matt Burke wrote the lion’s share of lyrics in the corners of pubs over relatively warm pints, while the remainder of the EP was penned in a caravan in Gracetown, a small town in WA’s South West. Expertly recorded by Dylan Olivierre (The Money War) and mixed by Andy Lawson (Tired Lion, Gyroscope), the eventual sessions in Perth have captured the perfect balance between the delicate tones of the band and the power of their live sound.
While Saw Myself was written amidst pure tumultuousness after a death in the family and touched on themes of reflection and perspective, new single High Street is a different animal to its predecessor. Matt says of the track “I wrote this song in London last year, where among other things, I was perpetually confused about how there could be so many streets called ‘High Street’ that the locals would refer to, before I realised they called every main street the ‘high street’. The song uses the term as a metaphor for a place where you feel happy, and how sometimes a certain person can drive you straight there. In a greater sense, the song reflects on an on-again off-again relationship where I had to walk away after being told there was no hope left for it, only for the other person to try and open the door after they’d forced it shut.”
For fans of hook-laden specialists like The Jungle Giants and Methyl Ethel, Foreign Architects will be staking their claim as one of one Perth’s most promising indie-rock exports as they kick off the second half of the year with shows across Margaret River, Fremantle and Perth.
