GAZEY RELEASE DEBUT ALBUM, SOLE

If you’ve stumbled across GAZEY doing their thing in one of Perth’s venues in the last little while, you’ll know that they’re insanely good! Now, they’re about to release their debut long player, SOLE.

Combining affectionate nostalgia for 70s and 80s studio sounds with contemporary song writing sensibilities, Perth art pop prodigies GAZEY release their highly anticipated debut LP SOLE through Group Therapy Records on October 2nd.

Following on from the krautrock/Prince inspired single ‘Sleep’ (RTRFM’s most played track of 2019 at June 30), and Springsteen-esque anthem ‘River’, SOLE brings together the band’s progressive art pop sound with the aid of a strong DIY production aesthetic (featuring a impressive cache of synthesisers) and meticulous arrangements that listeners and critics have come to expect from this virtuosic five-piece.

New single ‘Society’ leads the release; a self-reflective take on relationships with a bittersweet tone and expressive personal lyricism inspired by the likes of Feist and Jenny Lewis. Taking a production approach incorporating guitar and electronic sounds that nods towards the likes of Vampire Weekend, the song encapsulates the band’s endearing honesty and love of warbled and fuzzed sounds.

The album’s primary theme of isolation was not intentional. In fact, brothers Josiah and Ezekiel Padmanabham wrote most of the songs independently without any intention of sharing them publicly before realising the obvious synergies. The solitary reflections may seem at odds with the gregarious nature of the music but in many ways that is the joy and genius of ‘Sole’. The album’s penultimate track ‘Gearstick’ encapsulates this; a reflection on sexuality delivered in a contemporary synth-driven package that brings to mind Blood Orange and Toro Y Moi.

From the album’s opening track ‘Bees’ which channels the progressive pop and quirky sensibilities of Ariel Pink through to the dark fuzz and eerie hums of ‘Pillar’, ‘Sole’ is an album for the ages, to be pulled apart and savoured, or just to be danced around to in your lounge room, with the lights out.

SOLE by GAZEY is released on October 2nd through Group Therapy Records. It is being launched at The Aardvark (Fremantle) on Thursday October 3rd and at The Bird (Northbridge) on Saturday October 5th.
