GET TO MERK!

Get to Merki
False Cobra at Dirty Merkin Studio

Matty Merkin’s been operating his almost-eponymously-surnamed Dirty Merkin Studio for a year or so now and is celebrating that fact and the state of local music with Merkinfest, a fun 16-band/two-stage gig for a good cause.

Merkinfest, being the first one, is a bit of a tester but eventually I want it to be a safe space for people and also a place for bands to play where they can hopefully earn some well-deserved bucks rather than making bars – and the likes – money.”

Part proceeds will also go to aid the homeless, and in a very caring manner, at that.

“I’ll be making up homeless summer packs to give away to homeless people over the next few weekends,” Matty says. “They’ll include some clean clothes, socks, undies, a hat… also some tobacco and a miniature of whiskey.”

When asked if he has any favourite studio regulars, Matty is diplomatic yet direct. “They’re all my faves!” he laughs, “but special mention to Nod, Mascara Snakes, False Cobra and Zerodent.

So what are set to be some of the highlights of Merkinfest?

“The whole of Merkinfest is a highlight! It’s a killer line-up and all ‘round I’m very excited for the Perth music, there are some great young bands starting out.”

Merkinfest stars Doctopus, Zerodent, The Sperts, Aborted Tortoise, Rinehearts, Oosterbanger, Gap Year (fka Regular Boys), Swayzee, The Mascara Snakes, Fuzz Toads, Shaus, The Chlorines, False Cobra, Michael, Cryot Girl, live art and a food truck. It all happens at Dirty Merkin Studio, 117 Russell St Morley, from 3pm on January 19.
