Perth International Jazz Festival returns for 2019 with events happening across Perth over the weekend of 8 – 10 November. Featuring free and ticketed events, intimate artist talks and workshops, the Festival has plenty to offer for everyone from jazzheads and to total newbs. Around The Sound spoke to Emiliano Sampaio, guitarist, trombonist and loop-station wrangler for international headline act, Meretrio, while he was enjoying breakfast in Vienna.
Founded in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 2004, Meretrio’s manifesto is to explore the diversity of popular music.
“We’re super happy to be coming to Australia for the first time,” Sampiano told Around The Sound. “It’s good for life, a new experience, and for the trio it’s also good. We’ve been together now for 16 years and many albums and recording. We’ve decided to take the best of Meretrio to play in Australia, so we’re playing some things from the past, some very recent stuff, some Brazillian music from the next album, everything. It will be fun for us.
“We’re inviting everybody!”
This is Meretrio’s first visit to Australia and they’re looking forward to their moment in the sun, both musically and to escape the clutches of the European winter where two-thirds of the band are now based. Come join them. Whether you think you know jazz or now, we guarantee you’ll enjoy their performance.
