Melbourne talent, Jordan Dennis today shares an animated twist on the video for his recent single “Hokus Pokus” in collaboration with Beats by Dr. Dre (Beats), and ahead of his HDMI2 EP out October 30 via his eponymous label imprint with The Orchard and The Operatives.
The new video has been animated by LA-based production company, Strangeloop Studios, who are responsible for live visuals behind acts including Flying Lotus, SZA, Kendrick Lamar and Anderson .Paak.
Adding hypnotic hand-drawn elements and watercolour washes the video enters a new dimension, as Dennis appears from a theatre under bright stage lights. Directed by 76m Films’ Jonathan Karalis, the original “Hokus Pokus” video displayed Dennis’ instant brand of cheeky wit and fast-changing flow, found on today’s new and annotated version. Dennis’ verses duck and weave between a low-end booming beat, in precise quick-fire succession before a singalong-ready chorus.
Strangeloop Studios on the video: “It was really fun to get to explore an alternate visual treatment to Jordan Dennis’ ‘Hokus Pokus’ video, taking it into a more psychedelic + animated realm with a combination of different approaches: optical flow, hand-drawn overlay frames, style transfer. Jordan is a great emerging talent in AU and while I think his performance and the video without any animated components stands on its own, It’s cool to be able to share this alternate take on it, bringing into a more abstract and surrealistic realm.”
Jordan Dennis on “Hokus Pokus”: “‘Hokus Pokus’ encompasses the type of magic I feel in being able to create what I love, around the people I love. I made this song really tryna step back from what I’m doing currently to look at the life I live and say ‘Wow. Isn’t all this amazing when you take a second to appreciate it?’.
In the few moments, I do take to look at my situation objectively outside of striving to be at that next level, I find myself being able to acknowledge how magical these opportunities are. I wanted this track to lend a perspective of presence, enjoyment and appreciation for the good in our lives that we are able to experience and thus should be celebrated.”
The release of “Hokus Pokus” marks the next chapter for Jordan Dennis as he also announces his upcoming HDMI2 EP. Showcasing his impressive musical range, from slick, rapid-fire rhymes to effortless RnB vocals, HDMI2 perfectly captures Jordan’s prolific talents and leaves no doubt of the MC’s unmatched skill in conquering a multi-genre soundscape.
The EP is set to include the Acclaim premiered, “The Link”, which included an accompanying video shot in isolation and directed by Japanese director, Kensaku Kakimoto (Film Reaktor), and the triple j’s Good Nights premiered “Doc Marty”, featuring ThatKidMaz and Denzel M. Both tracks received love across the airwaves, and support from online tastemakers including FilterZine, Sniffers, Purple Sneakers and more.
Today’s new animated video adds heightened aplomb that speaks to Jordan Dennis’ unrivalled energy. Watch now, and stay tuned for further music arriving from Dennis in October.
