When Bec Thomas, guitar slinger with The Wolfbats — a band we’ve previously described as ‘smashing out gritty, melodic punk ‘n’ roll’ — dropped us a line re their latest single, ‘Honestly’, and asked what we could do to help “a poor DIY punk band launch it online”… well, how could we say no.
‘Honestly’ delivers the goods, and by the time The Wolfbats get to the quiet bit towards the end, if you’re not feeling the tug on your heartstrings, you have no heart!
‘So, what do you think?’ we hear you ask, as we’ve been notoriously cranky in these interesting times.
‘Glad you asked!’
‘Honestly’ is a wee ripper of a song, starting out with scratchy guitar before bursting into life and then hitting the sing-along friendly chorus before the one-minute mark. Nothing is wasted in this ode to the music scene we’ve lost for the time being, which Thomas said, “is a bit of a homage to the awesome Perth scene. We’re hoping to fill everyone’s gig void a little with the vid.”
So, here it is in all its glory, premiering on Around The Sound.
Filmed at The Den, the video does indeed evoke the joy of times that, somehow, already seem long passed.
We asked Thomas for her thoughts about the video watching it now.
“Watching the ‘Honestly’ video now is a whole different experience to three months ago when I made it,” said Thomas. “Back then, it was an exciting snapshot of gigging in the amazing Perth scene. Watching it now, all of this is still evoked but with an element of nostalgia, coupled with an underlying anxiety/sadness over the prospect of the live music scene possibly not going back to normal. It’s certainly a strange time to release such a video, but maybe it is a good time: because it will give viewers that vicarious gig experience, it will remind everyone of how amazing, supportive and fun our scene was/is, and hopefully it also provides some inspiration.”
We’re with you, Bec. ‘Honestly’ delivers the goods, and by the time The Wolfbats get to the quiet bit towards the end, if you’re not feeling the tug on your heartstrings, you have no heart!
These joyous punks have done it again. The Wolfbats rock!
