Why are we so infatuated with being cool?
If you’re looking for music to awaken you from your current slumber, something that gets you dancing and makes you stop and think, “Yeah, I’m cool already, I don’t need to change a thing,” then Kat Wilson’s new single is for you.
This is a song for anyone who’s ever looked at themselves in the mirror and wondered if they’re good enough, so…everyone!
Hailing from Perth, Kat Wilson is an artist on the move. She’s played at WAMFest, Fremantle Folk Festival, Nannup Festival, Fairbridge Festival, The West Australian Guitar Festival and Blues at Bridgetown, sold out shows all over Western Australia, and supported artists as varied as Jeff Martin, Motor Ace, Russell Morris and From The Jam
Described as a mash up of Paul Kelly and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Wilson’s sonic brew is infused with hours spent sitting on council verge-collection furniture and playing ping pong. The music is taut, sweet and drenched in the azure of the WA coastline that is a core part of Wilson’s heritage. Add to that lyrics that come from a sharp observational eye and speak with a poet’s knack for creating meaning out of the ordinary, and you begin to get a sense of just what Wilson is capable of.
‘Cool’ sees Wilson taking her ‘iron fist in a velvet glove’ approach to song writing to new heights, wrapping up her incisive lyrics in the most sublime of melodies and hooks. This is a song for anyone who’s ever looked at themselves in the mirror and wondered if they’re good enough, so…everyone!
Listen to ‘Cool’ right now on Triple J Unearthed.
“Less filters, less fake and more dancing, that’s what I want to see,” said Wilson. “This one’s for anyone who’s sick of comparisons and has ever wondered if The Truman Show is actually reality. Nobody is cool and that’s what makes us all cool.”
Yep, that’s right, if you have to tell yourself you’re cool, then you’re probably not. Or maybe you are?
‘Cool’ is a fun, head bobbing with the car stereo turned up and the windows down, kind of tune. It’s an earworm of a song with a hook so fine that you’ll never want to stop listening to it.
Wilson also unleashes a little on the electric guitar on this one, showing off the licks that had Joe Satriani so excited when they jammed together, so listen for that, too.
