Perth artist, Kat Wilson, known for her heavenly voice and incredible guitar work, has just released her first Christmas single, ‘It’s Been A While’.
I thought it was about time there was some new Christmas music and this year has been so many things, it’s been difficult and beautiful all at the same time.
Kat Wilson
A heartbreakingly beautiful song, ‘It’s Been A While’ tips its hat to the closing of 2020 and a Christmas table that has fewer relatives to fit around it, as well as sharply observing the commercialism of the season with lines like, I’m walking through the shops and the tacky Christmas decorations are up / There’s a Westfield Santa standing to my right. But, as with the majority of Wilson’s songs, there’s a message of quiet joy and hope for the future, this time in the eternal message of the Christmas story.
We’re guessing that most of you will find it difficult to listen to ‘It’s Been A While’ without shedding a little tear and feeling overwhelmed by nostalgia and a burning hope for a future with family and those you hold close. The acoustic guitar and piano are just enough instrumentation to give Wilson’s voice room to fly, to transport, to take you on your very own journey into Christmases past, present and future.
But don’t be afraid of the journey, this is a song from an artist who is all about uplifting her listeners.
“I wanted to write a traditional Christmas song,” Wilson said. “I thought it was about time there was some new Christmas music and this year has been so many things, it’s been difficult and beautiful all at the same time. I just wanted to try to express what Christmas means to me right now. I hope people like the song. I hope they get something out of it, feel something.”
We have no doubt that you will.
