MONIQUE CLARE NEW SINGLE ‘IT WORKS’

Monique Clare

It Works is the first breakout single from cutting edge folk-pop artist, Monique Clare; an in-demand, award-winning cellist who’s toured internationally with The Maes and played for world-class artists Kate Miller-Heidke, Eminem and Katie Noonan as a multi-genre session musician for hire. Inspired by contrasting luminaries from Björk to Bach, Monique’s songwriting has become increasingly bold and dynamic.

It Works fixates on that moment, long after the fluorescent lights dim, the tags come off and the rush subsides, when you realise you’ve succumbed to the narcotic power of advertising…“and all the tricks, they work”.

With just her voice, four strings and a cello bow, Monique Clare carves out a musical landscape to get lost in. Driving rhythms collide with intricate cello lines; heart-tugging harmonies weave through compelling vocals. Her lyrics speak to the ruminations of her generation and dive deep into the universal experiences of love and loss.

Live, Monique is mesmerising and cathartic, like a tuning rod for the soul. She draws listeners into her storytelling, sifting through the raw, the imperfect and the unspoken.

Always seeking connection, she craves the rush of an intimately honest performance. As she steps onstage, the barrier between artist and audience disappears and the magic unfolds.

Monique was raised by a singer and a pipe organist who shared a mutual love of Bach, Gregorian chant and French Impressionist harmony. She grew up in a habitat of choirs, surrounded by layers of individual voices that formed an immersive wall of sound. It took her 13 years to discover Björk, 16 to form a Radiohead obsession, 21 to catch on to The Beatles and 26 to fall in love with Joni Mitchell.

On top of this musical baptism of fire has been an array of experiences as a multi-genre session musician. From touring internationally with The Maes, to being a hired gun for world-class artists Kate Miller-Heidke and Eminem, to accompanying legendary fiddle players Darol Anger and Hanneke Cassel; Monique has absorbed a set of entirely divergent genres and approaches to music. This has instilled an unshakable stage presence and conviction that she carries into her live solo shows.

Monique pushes herself to be fearless and intrepid in everything she does, whether it be teaching cello in Afghanistan, or leading groups of listeners up a mountainside in the dark for a sunrise concert. She jumps into cold water as a ritualistic reminder that anything is possible. Through her songwriting, Monique challenges her listeners to do the same: be vulnerable and courageous.

‘By The Stars’, Monique’s debut EP (2017), was a stripped-back, musical self-portrait. The songs are deeply personal accounts of her life, recorded both in the US and in her home city of Brisbane. This EP spurred on her first Australian tour, which included appearances at the Woodford Folk Festival, Blue Mountains Music Festival and Port Fairy Folk Festival. It also sparked interest internationally, with an official showcase at Folk Alliance International in 2018 (US) and 2019 (Canada).

After two years on the International touring road with The Maes, Monique returns to her solo project with a renewed sense of identity. Her songwriting has become increasingly bold and dynamic, swinging wildly between fragile beauty and emotional heft. ‘You Are’, the first taste from Monique’s debut record, was released in February, 2020.

A euphoric celebration of a former flame who remains a close friend, ‘You Are’ acts as Monique’s calling card, inviting listeners to preview her shimmering new musical direction, peppered with explosive orchestral embellishment.

Her striking, dynamic follow-up single, ‘It Works’, stages a dark, twisted and romanticised fixation on the narcotic power of advertising. It continues the sonic landscape of ‘You Are’ with a lavish arrangement of harp, double bass, violin and drums. It’s accompanied by a visually decadent music video that explores themes of vanity and consumption in the beauty industry.

Monique is currently recording her debut album, set for release in 2021.
