Following a string of releases and collaborations that include their sophomore EP La Festa dynamic West Australian hip-hop duo Otiuh kick off their 2021 with their latest single ‘Mamma Always Told Me.’
Originally written and recorded during Perth’s first lockdown the track sees the duo channel frenetic energy into a head nodding and low-end driven pastiche of synths, percussion and beat switches; delivering an earworm hook and tongue twisting verses all the while.
The track is an ode to personal development, the single sees Cesare and Jahmeil (Otiuh) explore the “advice given to us growing up … realizing that as a young adult you must start to give yourself advice in the same way you received it as a child.”
With an instrumental built around quick moving beat experiments, the track features seamless use of a wide array of sounds – sliding 808s are complemented by rich cajons and a patchwork of synthesizers.
Echoing this diverse sonic palette is Otiuh’s high-powered vocal performances, taking beat switches and half-time transitions in their stride with stylish ease. Rapid fire verses morph into an anthemic hook, stripped back beats explode into club ready basslines and the whole track is coated with a veneer of charisma.
Building on an already rock-solid reputation for indefatigable vibrancy both in the studio and on the stage, ‘Mamma Always Told Me’ is the start of a mammoth year of creativity for Otiuh.
The single launches on March 13th at beloved Perth venue The Bird with friends Myriad Sun, Drea, and Henry Kissinger (DJ set).
