Rising Perth hip hop outfit, Otiuh delivers another stellar collection of tracks with their new EP La Festa.
Packing quite a punch, each song is inspired by the whirlwind of growing from teenager to young adult, from gigs, to gatherings, to parties, to festivals – La Festa translates to ‘The Party’, and details the formative years for MCs, Cesare Papa and Jahmeil Baker.
Across the 7 track EP, each song is layered with rhythmic soundscapes and retrospective wordplay; the duo continues to showcase their talent as innovators of alternative hip hop. Whether it be the rap ferocity paired with Mediterranean guitars riffs in their lead single ‘Pour It Up’, the funky basslines in ’21’, or the old school hip-hop and disco crossover in ‘Pause For Funk’; Otiuh have managed to put forward a culmination of musical genres, whilst staying true to their trademark sound.
“I did a little less rapping, a little more singing. Jahmeil becoming a stronger MC and kept this consistency throughout the record. There’s a warm feel to every song. Although there are a few different styles it’s all glued together by the lyrical themes, and a thick 70’s mood that’s both parts funky and psychedelic. We’re really proud of this one,” explains Cesare.
Recorded, mixed and co-produced by Perth’s JCAL, the EP was created over the space of four months from November to February 2020. Featuring fellow Perth artists such as MALi JO$E on ‘Smoke Break’, Hyclass on ‘Pause For Funk’ and previously released single ’21’ featuring Adrian Dzuke and Outlnd; Otiuh bring together a posse of artists to create a collection of sound noteworthy of BROCKHAMPTON, Injury Reserve and Flatbush Zombies.
Following the release of their previous EP in 2019 Cold Recreation and their 2020 releases ‘One For Me’and ’21’ the pair have received national recognition from tastemakers such as AUD$, NME Australia, Purple Sneakers, Pilerats, as well as being added to Apple’s Music’s The New Australia, MTV and rage. The duo have also received airplay across triple’s Home & Hosed, triple j Unearthed and support from a range of community radio stations including, FBi, RTRFM, Radio Adelaide and 4ZZZ.
