Melbourne blackened doom manifest Pale Leagues initiates “Reason”, the first showing from his menacing self-titled debut EP out independently via Just Druid Records in November, 2020.
“Reason” – available on all platforms now and featuring a majestically shot bush rendering by Australian film maker Griff Tapper – introduces the brutal aesthetic to come as guitars, synths, percussion and plaintive voice plough a malodorous trench, knee deep in despair and aggression.
Pale Leagues, a founding member of seminal 90’s Melbourne goth outfit In Sect, then later with extreme metal lords Halo and a gathering of underground assemblies including Betty Loves Satan, Lords of Ruin and Israal since, returns to the darker worlds of his mid-90’s output with this provoking release.
Pale Leagues exists to resist the splintering world. Ramparts of crushing detuned guitar and vicious minimal drums divide and create space. Grim riffs, iced synths and scything cymbals slice bone ward. A death throes snapshot captured through a nihilistic filter, the production exalts the primal lo-fi power of proto black metal and death rock protagonists, but directs this dark matter toward advance.
Inspired by a series of 2017 rehearsals with a rhythm section featuring Martin O’Keefe and Alex Sparke which were curtailed soon after by life events, Pale Leagues sat on the rudimentary sketches he made at the time, deciding the songs were worth exploring at some point.
With the onset of the global pandemic, Pale Leagues retreated to the studio and rediscovered these basic foundations. Working in isolation, he reduced the tracks further until their deathly pall finally sat well, confident they would reflect this grim new time and space.
Pale Leagues concludes, “I know that self- pity in 2020 is kinda redundant. Sometimes though, you’ve just gotta get way down and out with yourself, just to make it through. It’s like wallowing, but louder!”
Pale Leagues debut single Reason is out – August 28th 2020
