EMPYREAN AT YAGAN SQUARE
FRINGE WORLD FESTIVAL 2020
Review by Caris Morcombe
All of the carnival vibes you’ll need this festival season are at Empyrean, Yagan Square. Think circus tent with a sun roof – the venue really did the performers justice as the moon peaked through the clouds. The masked DJ referred to as Knob Jockey was perched atop a sort of scaffolding cage – it wouldn’t have looked out of place on the Mad Max Fury Road set.
The nights ringmaster, The Mighty Gareth brought both humour and fear within the first 30 seconds of taking to the stage. I knew I was sitting almost too close for comfort when I could smell the petrol from the revving chainsaw. Expect white knuckles while having a laugh.
The comedy duo Emotionosis will have you in stitches. Farquad Presto is the Derek Zoolander of magic in his figure flattering leather pants. Through the laughs my focus was still captivated by the genuinely impressive magic tricks and it left me with a LOT of questions.
Stella Kinesis emerged on stage looking like a warrior queen from outer space. Her impressive operatic vocals delivered a stunning performance whilst the lyrics brought plenty of giggles. Prepared to literally feel the heat from some suspenseful fire stunts!
Dados unique brand of comedy was a delight. There was a good mix of innocence and cheek to his character. It’s not a quirky Fringe show without some audience participation from a nervous punter and Dado made damn sure to bring some interaction to the show.
Cirque Songstress was a standout performance. Prepared to be dazzled by her high octane aerial talent and if that’s not enough her incredible voice hits every note while she spins high velocity. Both skills so difficult to master well, yet she delivers both effortlessly and with a whole lot of style.
Primo Loco is an absolute must-see. It ticks all the quirky boxes for any fringe binger. Cabaret? Tick. Circus? Tick. Magic? Tick. I am yet to see its sister show Fuego Carnal but if it’s anything like Primo Loco I’m bloody excited!
