Perth’s queen of country music, Helen Townsend is set to release ‘Devils Curse’ the first single from her upcoming EP release, Love Lies ‘n’ Leaving.
…there’s a sweetness to ‘Devils Curse’ that makes it the perfect track for a road trip, a shoes-off dinner party or an evening round the fire.
Introducing Shannon Smith and showcasing the duo’s mellow vocal harmony blend, Love Lies ‘n’ Leaving, due for release early 2021, is a collection of songs that will further enhance Townsend’s reputation as a singer, songwriter and live performer.
A deviation from her usual country flavours, ‘Devils Curse’ is a rootsy, slow stomp with an Appalachian vibe and a slick southern slide. It steers away from the traditional frantic energy of Bluegrass, bringing the kind of laid-back, lazy eyed ambience that has become synonymous with music from Western Australia (think The Kill Devil Hills without all the booze and pills).
Townsend’s breezy vocals, in an Uncle Earl vein, are complemented by the warm, dulcet vocals of Smith, and Church’s expressive dobro, in a track that’s cleanly mixed and super panned (though I’d prefer the guitar and mix a bit more dirty). It may not be pushing boundaries but there’s a sweetness to Devils Curse that makes it the perfect track for a road trip, a shoes-off dinner party or an evening round the fire.
