SCIENCE: CHAPTER ONE

Electric State
Electric State

I get accused of a lot of stuff for what I write on Around The Sound. Being anti-WAM. Being irresponsible. Not taking some bands seriously enough. Not taking photographers seriously enough (it was me I was talking about). Taking some bands too seriously. Believing in Santa. Not believing in Santa. Writing stories that sound like something from Today Tonight. Not getting stories out quickly enough. The list goes on. And on. Ad nauseam (look it up!).

Yes, Bill, that’s correct, the launch for the video and single, ‘Fed By The Algorithm’, is coming up on 20 November at The Baltimore. Well done.

One thing I’ve never been accused of is taking a scientific approach to my stories. If anything, I get lambasted for making shit up. People write to me requesting meetings so they can ‘clarify’ things. Powerful people in this little town of ours. And then they don’t make a time to meet. But science? Never!

So, I thought I’d take a scientific approach to a story for once and attempt to answer the very important question: What happens when you take away a band’s mouthpiece?

You know the thing. There’s always one mouthy gobshite who hogs all the airtime when it comes to getting a message out to the world. Doesn’t matter that there’s (insert number of band members here) of them, everyone else takes a backseat. Then, when the band starts to get famous, they fuck off just before a tour and go run the Paris marathon. Or leave their car parked near Clifton Suspension Bridge and are never seen again. Or, even worse, quit the band and start a solo career.

Boo!

In Perth, there’s none mouthier than Electric State’s vocalist and megaphone fancier, Rob Viney. Back in September, his band announced they’d be releasing their first album. Sometime next year, don’t y’know. Not this week, not next week, but next year. So, I decided I’d see how well they go with their publicity campaign without their mouthpiece. I interviewed Electric State, but I didn’t let Viney say a single word. Over the next little while, I’m going to publish the results of my science experiment.

Here’s the first…whaddaya call it…chapter?

After 3.36 minutes of absolute nonsense, they managed to tell us that Legs Electric will be on the line up for their album launch on 29 January 2022.

“That was the big one that we really wanted,” said Bill Shaw, Drummer.

No band in history has ever let a drummer speak on their behalf. Not even Cream or Led Zeppelin. Go on, prove me wrong.

After another 4.09 minutes of the same, Ward said this:

“What other quite large bands do when they launch an album, they announce it a fair way out, so having it out for long enough can make people anticipate that it’s coming. Just sort of keep it in front of everyone and drop a little teaser, or do something every month.

“We’ve got a video clip to launch.”

Yes, Bill, that’s correct, the launch for the video and single, ‘Fed By The Algorithm’, is coming up on 20 November at The Baltimore. Well done.

Trying hard to stay awake at this stage, I asked about the video.

And so they showed me a clip of the clip. I was the first ever, outside the band to see it.

And — for those of you are appalled that I’ve been slagging off one of Perth’s best bands so far in this article, I’m going to stop attempting humour for a moment — it was bloody great! Highly charged, political, hard hitting, left-of-centre and, like their music simply irresistible.

As for their experiment in promoting an album that still doesn’t exist. Let’s just say, so far it’s journalist 1:0 band. After all, it was my idea to gag Viney and they fell for it.

Chapter 2 coming soon…
