Tura presents a cross-cultural journey weaving a rich tapestry of uniquely Australian music, celebrating the sounds of the Kimberley in this tour finale performance of Sonus at Freo.Social at 7:30pm on Tuesday 9 July.
This tension between the new, the risky and the established connections and traditions, is what gives these tours so much meaning and energy.
Tos Mahoney, Tura Artistic Director
The Sonus Finale celebrates three weeks of touring through the Kimberley by a unique collaboration of four of Australia’s finest musicians.
Sonus features Aboriginal star and singer-songwriter Naomi Pigram with Indigenous musical icon, Mark Atkins (didgeridoo, vocals, guitar), and two of Australia’s finest instrumentalists, cellist Judith Hamann and clarinettist Aviva Endean. This ensemble of artists come together to present the captivating and original new music created by their recent collaborations with Kimberley artists. They are joined on the night by special guests, double Grammy award-winning Lucky Oceans (pedal steel guitar), Taj Jamieson (vocals/guitar), Annika Moses (voice/electronics), Tos Mahoney (flute) and Tristen Parr (cello).
Full of story and the power of time on country and in community across the Kimberley, the Perth concert gives a unique opportunity to audiences to immerse themselves in a program that reaches across cultures, time and place.
By the time it hits Freo.Social, the tour will have travelled to Kununurra, Wyndham, Warmun, Halls Creek, Fitzroy Crossing, Beagle Bay, One Arm Point, Djarindjin, Lombadina, and Broome.
Tura’s Artistic Director, Tos Mahoney told Around The Sound that the Sonus tour, “has been a journey of great connections. Of course these come about through 15 years of Tura’s relationship building in communities across the Kimberley but there’s new connections like the new collaboration between Naomi Pigram and the other Sonus artists. This tension between the new, the risky and the established connections and traditions, is what gives these tours so much meaning and energy.
“Along with Naomi Pigram’s powerful songs so beautifully arranged by the Sonus ensemble is the solo work of Mark Atkins hauntingly majestic Didgeridoo , Aviva Endean’s soaring clarinets and Judith Hamann’s chilling cello. Collaborating in various combinations across the tour and across the program as well as performing new works inspired by the communities visited and the landscapes travelled through, Sonus has evolved across time and reflects the beauty, complexity and power of the Kimberley.”
Top all that off with magical vocal harmonies by Annika Moses and Mahoney’s idiosyncratic flute playing and Sonus is a truly profound and moving program, fully of questioning and connection to Country.
This is a not-to-be-missed event at one of Perth’s newest and best venues.
