We once dubbed End Of Fashion the “heavy metal Beatles” and, with their release of new single, ‘Ruby Lips’ we’re feeling well vindicated. Coming at you right out of the heart of the sixties via End Of Fashion’s early work like ‘She’s Love’ and ‘Too Careful’, ‘Ruby Lips’ is a slice of swaggering pop heaven that’s all vocal harmonies, deft guitar work — just enough and never too much — and fun, fun, fun ‘till someone tells them all it’s time to go home for tea. If this slice of youthful exuberance doesn’t put a bloody massive smile on your face we suggest you lay off the Botox. With ‘Ruby Lips’, End Of fashion are right back where they belong, at the top of the pops in Australia and, if we’re ever allowed to travel again, likely right around the world.
We give ‘Ruby Lips’ TFA.
‘Gonna Get Love’ the latest single from Perth’s international troubadours, Randa and the Soul Kingdom, is proof positive that we have greatness amongst us. This song pumps like a soul steam train, snaking through the tracks of your heart preaching, nay, I say, testifying the power of L. O. V. E. There would be few groovier bands anywhere in the world than Randa and the Soul Kingdom and with this high energy exhortation to join them in the temple d’amour, they’re bang on the mark yet one more time. If you ever get the chance to check out this band live, get ready to dance! if you’re stuck at home, you’ll have to make do with the video for ‘Gonna Get Love’. Just don’t try to watch it sitting down.
We give ‘Gonna Get Love’ PFA.
For those who like their music on the heavier side, Mage’s latest offering, ‘The Righteous’, is the place to be. Three minutes plus of balled up, scooped out fury with a rather surprising middle eight that transports the song to another place entirely, this is serious stuff! Hard hitting, unrelenting, sucker punching, make sure you’ve taken your blood pressure meds before having a listen, and you may just survive the experience. I’ve been listening to ‘The Righteous’ all week and it’s still not worn out its welcome. That’s got to be a good sign as far as I’m concerned. But that vein in my temple, it just won’t stop…
We give ‘The Righteous’ TFA.
Perth singer and songwriter, Kirsty Hulka’s, aka Sgt. Hulka, latest single, ‘Fallen Trees’ is a mid tempo ode to joy. If you’re thinking you might need to change your future, you could do worse than start by listening to Hulka’s groove-laden slice of heartfelt pop. Carried along by a swing beat, rising above the treetops on multi-layered harmonies and featuring Hulka’s signature piano sounds, ‘Fallen Trees’ is a sure sign that you can find freedom and happiness anywhere in this world, no matter how much arboreal carnage litters the path behind you. Sgt. Hulka are an inspiring and sweet sounding outfit, and pretty much everything they do is laced with diamonds. ‘Fallen Trees’ is one massive gem all of its own.
We give ‘Fallen Trees’ PFA.
