SINGLE OF THE WEEK

‘I Hope You Learn The Trumpet’, is one of those quirkily beautiful pop songs that comes along every now and then and messes with your heart and mind, ruffles your hair on the way through and tells you that, even though it may not feel like it right now, everything’s going to be all right. It’s got this little guitar hook that’s perfect in its simplicity and Georgina Cramond’s — the genius behind Ribs — voice slips from spoken word to soaring musicality and back so effortlessly and ingenuously that you can’t help but be drawn into her world. ‘I Hope You Learn The Trumpet’ is seriously good!

We give ‘I Hope You Learn The Trumpet’ AFA.

Giant Dwarf – ‘Tv Witch’

‘Tv Witch’, the latest output from Perth outfit, Giant Dwarf, is 5.28 minutes of spaced out, seriously good stoner rock. With its Zeppelin references in the lyric, this is a song that wears it’s heart on its royally purple, lacy-cuffed sleeve. Bands like Giant Dwarf shouldn’t exist in the 21st Century, they had a whole decade or two of dominance last century. The fact that they do and that they can make music like ‘Tv Witch’ and still sound so immediate, so self-aggrandisingly good says something, we’re just not quite sure what. We’re feeling a little bit dazed after the last listen through and we’re just about to drop the needle and listen again.

We give ‘Tv Witch’ TFA.

Pinstripe  – ‘You And I’

The new single from Albany alt rockers, Pinstripe, can only be described as modern-day synth punk. There are guitars there somewhere in the mix, but this song’s been built with a shiny slickness at its heart that’s either going to irritate the stuck-in-the-past punk diehards (fuck ‘em) or delight with its fresh take on the genre. There must be something good in the water in Albany if this is the sort of music that’s bubbling up. Not unexpected, really, it’s always been a town of innovation (look out for traffic lights next time you’re down there, you won’t find any) and, with ‘You And I’, Pinstripe are continuing that lofty tradition.

We give ‘You And I’ TFA.

Runier – ‘Back 2 Me’

‘Back 2 Me’ takes a long time to take off and, when it does, it heads off in a completely different direction to the one you’re expecting. Instead of doing the soft loud thing, it takes a diversion into another padded room for a moment or two and then comes back to the song’s main premise, but builds and grows it, a little more, a little more… ‘Back 2 Me’ is a mesmerising aural treat that confounds at every turn. At first, we didn’t want to like it, by the end we were wishing there was more. Pretty close to perfection, really.

We give ‘Back 2 Me’ AFA.

Ursula – ‘Slip n Slide’

‘Slip n Slide’ is one of those songs that makes you want to pick up an instrument and start a band. It speaks of summer and simpler times when festivals were a thing and bands like Ursula played the sunset spot on a side stage and you just knew that they’d be huge. Then, when you go home and pick up your guitar and try to play that riff, you realise that nothing’s in standard tuning and all that simplicity actually takes a lot of work, and you like them just that little bit more for it, even though you’re a tiny bit jealous. ‘Slip n Slide’ is just over three minutes of everything and it gets better every time you listen to it.

We give ‘Slip n Slide’ TFA.
