Never one to stay still for long, Band Of Missfits singer and songwriter, Kym Redmond, has been busy during the COVID lockdown, producing a solo track and a new single with Perth’s melodic rock giants in the making, Band Of Missfits.
…a songwriter who pens messages direct from her soul to yours…
‘Lost In You’ is a collaboration with Amberdown vocalist/guitarist, Dan Connell. It’s a sultry, melancholic acoustic ballad that mines the perennial territory of loves lost and hearts broken and, as a study of the human condition, it pushes all the right buttons. The vocal synergy between Redmond and Connell brings on goosebumps as they play out the heartbreak of the other side of love with lines like, Your silence is deafening / As my answers are found.
Speaking about her latest solo work, Redmond reflected that ‘Lost In You’ “is my greatest hidden piece of work yet. It was never meant to come out when I wrote it all these years ago. Only now I feel it has the air to breathe.”
This collaboration gives Redmond creative space that she can’t always find with her band and shines a light on a songwriter who pens messages direct from her soul to yours, rarely filtering her thoughts and feelings. Connell’s departure from the alt/prog rock that is Amberdown’s staple to lend his guitar and vocals to ‘Lost In You’ shows another dimension of this powerhouse of the Perth scene.
Together, Redmond and Connell are a revelation of nuanced acoustic rock and, while standing in its own right as a potential classic, ‘Lost In You’ begs the question, what’s next for this duo. Listen and you’ll definitely want to hear more.
‘Starvation’, the latest single from Band Of Missfits will absolutely slake your thirst for new music from this WAM Award nominated, hills-dwelling band of Perth rock prodigies. This is a song the band have kept on a tight leash, starting with a simmer and getting progressively hotter as it cycles from the sparse, widescreen opening to the full tilt ending that leaves you on a cliff edge. In between, the licks are searing and the band sounds as heavy as they ever have.
‘Starvation’ is something of a coming of age single for Band Of Missfits. Past offerings have shown great promise, but this is the first time the band have sounded entirely like themselves, leaning on their influences, but forging their own path. This is a threshold moment for a band that is beginning to show that they have the flex of greatness in them.
For vocalist and songwriter, the track is also about her band’s frustration. “I think ‘Starvation’ is more or less about our journey as a band,” said Redmond, “I feel we’ve been kind starved for opportunities when it comes to the kind of gigs we want to play and sometimes it feels every time we get knocked back for a festival or whatever that it is only feeding that starvation.”
We do it because we love it / There’s nothing more to say, Missfits’ vocalist Redmond declares during ‘Starvation’, with the passion that’s rapidly becoming her trademark. That love is evident in every note of this new single from Band Of Missfits. Here’s hoping they’ll have plenty more to say very soon.
