The Little Lord Street Band release their new single ‘Fighting for Air’ on Friday, March 20. Launching the single alongside good friends the Steve Hensby Band at a double-header launch taking place at Lyric’s Underground on Friday, March 27. ‘Fighting for Air’ and tour come ahead of the band’s debut album, due for release in August.
Frontwoman Tash Shanks describes her struggles with mental health and panic attacks in ‘Fighting for Air’ with the aim to encourage others to seek help and know they’re not alone.
Tash explains: “I wrote this song about four years ago when I was really struggling with depression, anxiety, and panic attacks. I was paranoid about everything to do with my friends, famil, workplace and music. I couldn’t escape this feeling of dread. It honestly felt like I couldn’t breathe . . . or function as a human. When I’m out surfing with my family and found when I’m caught in the impact zone, the panic in fighting for air isn’t too dissimilar to on land with mental health”
It’s taken a few years to refine ‘Fighting for Air’. It’s been written and rewritten. We shared it with the band, they listened and we all felt less is more, and it changed again. The song is me, totally vulnerable and honest with my mental health experiences and through the song-writing, recording process and support from the band, I was able to find my truth and accept the help I needed. Now, I’m ready to share this song with the world.”
‘Fighting for Air’ demonstrates the bands dynamism with a stripped back approach giving over to simplistic instrumentation through tribal drums, representing a heartbeat, from Alex Megaw, Michael Savage’s rolling bass, fluid hooky jangly guitar lines from James Rogers, and smooth harmonies from Belle Harvey. Furthermore, Rada Studio’s Dan Carroll lifted the song further with the addition of wind soundscaping and the production of the coastal feel.
The single comes out March 20 ahead of the 11 date ‘Fighting For Air’ Single Tour, kicking off with the band’s launch on March 27. The band will visit the South West, Great Southern, Gascoyne and Mid-West regions of WA before heading back home.
