THE ULTIMATE PARTY

Kira Puru isn’t afraid to be doing something a little different in the pop music scene. Her music is darker, edgier and deeper than your average pop offering. It’s goth disco, to be precise. Around The Sound chatted with the Melbourne-based singer and covered all topics from maxi pad jackets to her dream guest list.

Just incase you were curious as to who Kira Puru would cut loose with if she could party with anyone, dead or alive, young David Bowie is at the top of her list.

Known for her self-described “chunky, swaggy bass lines” and “tongue in cheek lyrics”, Puru produces party anthems of a unique kind.

“I used to classify my old band’s sound as ‘doom pop’ and I really like the contradiction of those two elements together. So when I started making things that were more contemporary pop, I started calling it goth disco,” she explained.

Puru took the playful, upbeat characteristics of pop and combined it with her often introspective nature to achieve this distinctive blend of genres.

“I really love how sad storylines can still exist in this really confident and irreverent pop production,” said Puru. “On the whole, I like to make confident tunes that make people feel good and wanna dance.”

Puru developed a passion for performing through writing songs and coordinating her own concerts from a young age. Since her parents gave her a Casio keyboard at the age of five she has developed a voice that demands to be heard.

“I used to pretend that I was a superstar when I was really little and sing for my family and subject them to, what I’m sure now, were really terrible, annoying shows,” she said.

It can be safely said that Puru has improved since then, with her feel-good party hit, ‘Molotov’, coming in at #75 in the 2018 Hottest 100 countdown.

“I was sitting in a park with some friends with the radio when it came on and we were all super stoked. It was awesome.”

I jumped at the opportunity to ask Kira about her quirky outfit choice for the APRA awards held in April. Puru wore a garment by designer, Emma Hutton, from her collection titled ‘Bloody Luxury’ – a clothing range inspired by the financial availability of sanitary products to women. These pieces were designed to challenge the classification of sanitary products as luxury items, rather than necessities that should be supplied for free.

“I loved the sentiment behind that collection and I also just loved the jacket… it’s literally a bloody pad,” she said.

Kira Puru is set to kick off her biggest national headline tour to date in a couple of weeks. Having toured with Peking Duk recently, Puru is excited to share some new material with some of the towns she visited on her last tour.

“I’m writing my record at the moment and there’s a bunch of new songs that I’ve never played live before that I’ve been saving up to play on this tour,” she teased. “I’m really excited to cut loose.”

Just incase you were curious as to who Kira Puru would cut loose with if she could party with anyone, dead or alive, young David Bowie is at the top of her list.

“I just loved everything he stood for and he was really influential in me feeling okay as a kid growing up, being weird. I think he’s like God for the weirdos,” Puru said, before adding, “or Mariah Carey. Or George Michael… That would be my ultimate party.”

Catch Kira Puru on tour for the ultimate party at Jack Rabbit Slim’s on Friday 5 July.
