Two-piece indie pop-rock band This Way North will release their new single ‘You be You’ on Tuesday the 26th of May, beckoning us to take a peak out from our windows and dream of brighter days to come.
A timely track, You Be You is a moody, tremolo-tinged heart-tugger—the kind of song you want to hear live with your eyes closed and hips swaying, as Leahy and Jungalwalla’s voices inch upwards to a perfect finish.
“You Be You is a gorgeous tune from This Way North, their sweet harmonies sending us drifting all the way up to cloud nine.”Sarah Howells, Double J
This track is the first single from their upcoming EP Vol. 3 the finale of a trilogy of EPs they’ve released since 2016. (2016’s EP Vol. 1 and 2018’s EP Vol. 2)—and is a collection of tracks from guitarist/singer Leisha Jungalwalla and drummer/singer Cat Leahy, written while travelling and touring around Australia, New Zealand and Canada.
Recorded in Nashville in January 2020 on a trip to the US—where This Way North was invited to showcase at the Folk Alliance International Conference in New Orleans—and produced by Brad Jones (Skipping Girl Vinegar, Justin Townes Earle, Bob Evans), You be You is at its heart celebratory, a salute to honoring and appreciating the differences in relationships, no matter what challenges arise.
It’s been three years since Jungalwalla and Leahy traded a bricks-and-mortar home for vanlife on the road in Canada and Australia, and a spirit of adventure and unbridled joy has taken up permanent residence in their music. Poignant and uplifting, the song speaks of living close quarters with another; experiencing life’s ups and downs, while doing it all with the constant movement of touring.
Since their last release in 2018, This Way North—named Music Victoria’s Best Regional/Outer Suburban Act in the same year—has continued full-time touring across Australia, New Zealand and Canada, supporting Ash Grunwald and Kate Ceberano along the way; and, playing local festivals including Queenscliff, Mullumbimby, Woodford, Port Fairy, and the Ness Creek, and Robson Valley festivals in Canada.
Full of rapturous nostalgia, You be You is the perfect first track off the final instalment to This Way North’s three-part welcome party: a sonic time machine to summer festivals with cold beers, one-handed snacks and bodies pressed close together.
“This Way North’s music is irresistible! Chewy, tasty hooks, incredible drum beats partnered with deliciously discreet guitar licks that dare your toes not to tap and your hips not to sway, all topped off with sweet vocal harmonies. Theirs is a sound that is delightful and familiar, yet completely fresh and new. On stage, this duo is absolutely captivating and disarming, bringing a light-hearted energy to the room and an ability to create lifelong fans in a matter of moments.”
