The WA Music Industry Association (WAM) is the quiet achiever of the WA music scene, doing many great things behind the scenes to stimulate and support original music in our part of the world. Once a year, the organisation becomes ubiquitous with the WAM Awards, WA’s equivalent to the Grammys, and WAM Fest, our take on South By Southwest. So, when WAM announced the appointment of Mark Neal as Festival Director for 2019 and Claire Hodgson as coordinator of WAMCon, we were immediately interested in knowing more.
Of WAMCon, Hodgson said, “There will be a greater focus on sustainability, community and creativity this year, with the event again being housed at the beautiful State Theatre Centre of WA as part of WAMFest. With practical, bespoke, and future-focused sessions to support music makers and businesses to get their music to the next level, we can’t wait!”
When quizzed about his vision for WAMFest, Neal said, “WAMFest has a long history of events that celebrate up and coming talent and give them a great opportunity to level up and take the next step in their career. I want to keep honouring what Festival coordinators have done in the past and provide a better festival experience for everyone involved – bands, volunteers, conference attendees, venues, and punters.
“The scene has changed a lot, the industry has changed a lot. Every year a new crop of musical heroes move through the ranks in WA and make great music. In my time here there has been a big celebration on diversity and I’m looking to keep that going with better representation across genres, demographics, and audience.”
The annual celebration of West Australian music is back with WAMFest, WAMCon, and WAMAwards dates locked in for 2019. The festivities will kick off with a regional edition of WAMFest taking place in October. The WAMAwards will be held once again at the Hyatt Regency Perth on 31 October, the State Theatre Centre of WA will be housing WAMCon from 1 – 2 November, and the main WAMFest event will run from 1 – 3 November 2019.
