For those who are, like myself, unfamiliar with the territory, Freo Harbour Bar is situated very close to the aforementioned harbour in the building which also hosts the renowned E Shed Markets. This is handy should one need a knick knack, souvenir or some army surplus wear from one of the numerous stalls (God knows, they need your business), in between sets by the Wayne Green Trio.
For those who are unfamiliar with the craggy face and gravelly voice of Wayne Green, you really do need to get out a bit more. Greenzo is one of those rare beasts; a genuine, bona fide, legend. Wayne has been playing music literally since before you, or perhaps even your parents, were born.
Famous for years as the frontman of The Phantoms, one of his current musical outlets, the Wayne Green Trio features Andrew Morgan on acoustic guitar and harmonica and Henk Langendoen electric guitar.
As befits a cruisey afternoon bar band the material is predominantly made up of bluesy covers plucked from the likes of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams, with a tasty smattering of Rolling Stones and rounded out by some of Wayne’s own extensive back catalogue.
On this blustery Saturday arvo, against the elements Wayne Green Trio drew a very decent crowd indeed, and held them devotedly between rain squalls in this semi-covered venue. Then the sun burst its smile upon the Port, glistening the trickles of dampness golden, and all was good. Nope, all was great! Just to hear some heartfelt live music played so well and enjoyed by so many. Oh yeahs!
Freo Harbour Bar hosts live music every Saturday and Sunday afternoon.
Wayne Green Trio will return next Saturday, 20th of June. Next time I’ll be bringing the whole family.
