Perth’s own art-rock outfit YӦMI SHIP often described as an ‘experimental and unorthodox band that delicately glide through musical landscapes’ will be launching their 3rd EP, the underwater themed ‘PYRAMIDS OF YONAGUNI’ at JACK RABBIT SLIM’S on the 10TH AUGUST 2019.
Formed in September 2016, the youngest member Jade was only 15, Jarred 17 and Nick 20 when they realized there was certain chemistry between them. They immediately started composing instrumental musical journeys in the form of psychedelic space-rock structures using odd time signatures, complex rhythms, anchoring bass and reverb drenched guitar.
The band soon developed a loyal following and gained respect amongst their much older peers. In the last 12 months alone the band has notched up almost 50 shows including supports for heavyweights Karnivool, Cog and a reformed Cinema Prague – at Fremantle Festival ‘HIDDEN TREASURES’
Coincidently, YÖMI SHIP’s upcoming 3th EP “PYRAMIDS OF YONAGUNI”, recorded with award winning producer ANDY LAWSON, explores themes based on the unexplored deep sea and the vast empty spaces of the world, untouched by humans. Expect to hear the usual Yomi Ship song structures/forms but prepare to follow them on their improvised passages too.
While their first SELF TITLED EP (2017) worked on ideas of passing from one world to another, their 2nd EP ‘MOODS’ (2018) represented all the emotions and feelings during the recording process.
‘PYRAMIDS OF YONAGUNI‘ incorporates, full songs and interludes plus two bonus tracks PANTATHIANS and ZOOMBINI previously released as a double single ‘UNDER THE TREE IN THE CAVE‘.
“We had some fantastic artwork custom made for this EP and we think the visual aspect helps to create a frame of mind for the recordings. Obviously there are heavy references to the deep sea. Specifically our interlude track ‘Exhumed’ was created for the purpose of transporting you to some sort of underwater grave in the pyramids. We really wanted to play around with our dynamics, we’re hoping ‘Banish dog maching’ will be that track. It has multiple sections that swing between genres and intensity. We did some research as a band and came across the ancient ruins of the The Yonaguni Monument. It’s off the coast of Japan and there’s only one pyramid down there. We kinda expanded on that with our plural “Pyramid’S’ of Yonaguni” implying there could be more than one pyramid if you went deep enough” explained drummer Nick Osborne
The band will be bringing some long time friends along to help celebrate their new release; with AH TREES, POST DEPRESSION MAKE OUT SESSION AND TETHER all joining in to round-out the line-up.
Tickets for the ‘PYRAMIDS OF YONAGUNI’ EP launch will be available at the door for $10; with copies of the EP and a limited number of shirts also available from the merchandise stand on the night.
