While much of the nation continues to struggle with enforced lockdowns and limitations on crowd capacities, local musicians in Perth are in the unique position of being able to capitalise on a thriving entertainment scene that for the first time, maybe ever, has become the envy of our Eastern States counterparts.
One local artist who is starting to make real waves within the industry is Perth Pop/ RnB act Young Dapper. After a big second half to 2019 that included the launch of his debut single, a collaboration with local bridal designer and emerging Pop Star “Rachel Rose” and his appearance on “Reloaded” with Ghanian Afrobeats Superstar Kelvynboy, Young Dapper had positioned himself to make some serious progress in 2020.
That progression has been realised with a string of outstanding releases including the melodic trap release “Crazy”, the powerful duet “Eternity” featuring Ashton Wee that throws back to some of the best early 2000’s RnB and more recently the sensual, slow jam “Serotonin”.
With 14 songs now available on Spotify and many more unreleased, it was a delight to attend a night with Young Dapper and his talented ensemble of collaborators for a show quite unlike anything else currently circulating on the Perth music scene, live from The Ellington Jazz Club on Beaufort St in Perth on Friday August 14th.
Opening with a 40 minute set that told the story of Young Dapper’s past relationships, highlighted through tracks like “Lust for Love”, “Regular”, “Misty’s Song”, “Wifey” and “Crazy”, Young Dapper’s vocals were on point, hitting some stunningly high falsetto and moving the crowd with some inspiring conversation between tracks.
The second set was a real highlight of the evening, with a 4 track ode to family, Young Dapper opened with his beautiful ballad “Dear Mother” which evoked so much emotion that many members of the crowd were seen visibly impacted with one patron declaring “That song should be dedicated to all mums” much to a rapturous applause from the entire audience.
If “Dear Mother” heightened the emotions in the room, the follow-up, a cover of Jeff Buckley’s “Hallelujah” in duet with Ashton Wee was like a dagger to the heartstrings. Haunting, melodic and with every note absolutely on point, you could hear a pin drop in the sold-out 110 person capacity venue.
Ashton remained on stage for a second duet, the breathtaking “Eternity” track which has a similar vibe to the 2007 hit “No Air” by Chris Brown & Jordin Sparks. “There are not many 18-year-olds in Australia that can sing RnB harmonies like Ashton Wee” laughs Young Dapper and he is absolutely right. The vocal talent from this young lady is formidable.
Anyone that came to this gig thinking there would be an intermission was in for a major shock when it was announced that Hip Hop artist Cortext would be dropping a guest set of mainly unreleased tracks for the excited crowd. In an action-packed 40 minutes, Cortext wowed the audience with his razor-sharp lyrics and high energy performance.
This was a set that had the entire crowd on their feet (and in some cases on stage) as Cortext set a standard for the type of high-quality Hip Hop that is rising from the back streets of Perth.
One of the major highlights was Cortext’s original take on Billie Eilish’s “Bad Guy”, a track that is currently available to stream on Spotify and well worth adding to your playlists.
Cortext also introduced a new artist A2, as they debuted their latest collaboration “Slow it Down” which did anything but slow down the audience who by this stage of the evening had absolutely packed the small dance floor in the Ellington front bar.
The night concluded with an epic 15 minute finale as Young Dapper returned to the stage to perform his two most up tempo tracks, the summer inspired “Lust for Love” and the club banger “Fur Queen” as well as a yet to be released collaboration with Cortext and A2 titled “Like Home”.
This was a night of exciting entertainment and a timely reminder that despite a distinct lack of interstate or international acts currently touring in WA, there is plenty of local talent rising up and ready to make the big step towards putting the Perth music scene on the map!
