AUTUMN SAGE
‘WHY?’
Some songs are instant. They dive straight under the skin and bristle hair follicles from the inside. They overwhelm the limbic system with the sit-down-and-listen chemicals, any impulse to fight or flight a distant tendril of mist dissipated by a gentle and loving sun. They take you away from yourself, the day, from reality, even if only for a few minutes. And, while instant, when you listen to them again, they keep living inside you. Some songs are salve for the ragged souls of 21st-Century Earth dwellers, giving us the opportunity to forget and, for those of us who’ve been around long enough, to remember as well.
‘Why?’ the debut single from Boorloo/Perth indie folk singer singwriter, Autumn Sage, is that kind of instant. Sounding like it came straight out of Topanga Canyon circa 1967, ‘Why?’ carries the wistful insight of an artist who may have been around before or, at least, mined her elders’ record collections to discover the likes of Joni Mitchell and Neil Young.
Built around an acoustic guitar chord progression that rises with the melody, simultaneously evoking sadness and hope, you’re hooked from the moment the slightly serrated soundwaves of the strings kick in.
Why did I listen to every voice but mine?, sings Autumn Sage as she questions the what ifs of existence with a bell-clear voice that belies its owner’s relative youth. With the ability to create such poignant music, it seems clear that Sage must now follow her own compass into the future, take the lyrical content of ‘Why?’ as a lesson well learned and head towards what should be a very bright future as the quiet, compelling folk phenomenon she seems destined to become.
