There comes a time in some musicians’ careers — after they’ve served whatever apprenticeships, paid their dues, hung tough and survived all the bullshit — when they can do just about anything they damned well please. Why? Because they’re simply that good. Papa Peet, a new outfit from the pool of musical fecundity that is Boorloo/Perth, Western Australia, are one such example.
We’re definitely in Goldilocks territory here.
Papa Peet was born out of the long-standing musical association between guitarist, songwriter and producer, Jules Peet, and vocalist and musical auteur, Tony Papa Adams. Best known, so far, for their work with Boorloo blues stalwarts, Old Blood, Papa Peet reflects this pair’s relentless urge to collaborate and create and, if debut single, ‘Goin’ Crazy’, is any indication, the world and its shell likes are in for some rare treats.
According to Peet, ‘Goin’ Crazy’, “…paints a vivid picture of the struggles we all face in today’s chaotic world, from feeling overwhelmed by life’s burdens to grappling with societal issues. It captures the essence of modern-day frustrations.”
The groove on ‘Goin’ Crazy’ is nagging and relentless, reflecting Peet’s frustrations. The vocals are restrained as Adams sings with building fury at the ills of modern society and then cuts loose on the song’s eponymous refrain. As a producer, Peet has laid down the perfect musical bed for Adams’ vocals, which see him in career best form. We’re definitely in Goldilocks territory here.
If ‘Goin’ Crazy’ is any indication of what’s to come from Papa Peet, all I can say is thank whoever the fuck organises this crazy carnival we call life, because flowers will always find a way and this track, lovers, is a massive sunflower growing through what feels like a permanent eclipse.
