As if he hadn’t already given the world enough happiness through his music, Boorloo/Perth musician and producer, Mike Nutt (MYTHS, The High Learys), today releases the first single from his solo project, Dopamine Slot Machine.
‘Swim’ is as close to perfect pop music as you’ll ever get.
‘Swim’ is a cheeky slice of modern psychedelia that pulses like a lava lamp and winks at you like your favourite aunt, all platonic love and encouragement. It’s summer music that brightens up a winter’s day and, if I have any complaints (I have none), it’s over all too soon.
For those wedded to the present, Nutt is the one who plays synths with Boorloo/Perth psych superstars, MYTHS. Now, as Dopamine Slot Machine, he’s bringing his ear for melody and technical wizardry to the fore, creating music that just makes you smile, no matter what.
And how does he do this, you ask? I dunno, I have no idea how synths work, I just know that, when used right, musicians have taken their soldering irons to them, plugged and unplugged their patch leads, and created some of the most extraordinary and diverse contemporary music you’d ever want to hear. Think everything by Kraftwerk, The Who on the opening to ‘Won’t Get Fooled Again’, Depeche Mode — the list goes on. Dopamine Slot Machine sounds nothing like any of them, but ‘Swim’ is good enough to get in the pool with them any day of the week.
‘Swim’ has this beautifully annoying quality in the repetition of the opening riff that instantly burrows under your skin. The vocals are pure Nutt, all jaunt and jabbing syllables and then there’s the middle eight — that cofounded bridge — which is simply glorious in its ascending transcendence.
Dopamine Slot Machine’s ‘Swim’ is as close to perfect pop music as you’ll ever get. What more can I say? I’m not even going to mention the name Nutt has chosen for his solo outing, but it and his music make me glow with happiness every time I lay my eyes and ears on them.
