‘MONEY MAKES THE WORLD GO ROUND’
Dr Cuz delivers again with his reggae infused new single, ‘Money Makes The World Go Round’, taking down capitalism as only the good doctor can.
…you know that your ears are being cupped by something of a musical visionary.
Featuring rapper, With A Zed, and Peter Renzullo of Scudley Records fame, ‘Money Makes The World Go Around’ takes a Bowerbird approach to music making. Dr Cuz and his current gang borrow from the song ‘Money Money’ from Cabaret, the 1972 musical set in 1930s Berlin that charts the rise of Fascism in Europe; ABBA’s ‘Money, Money, Money’; and The Beatles, with its ‘…but it can’t buy love’ refrain. And they do it all with an Afro Caribbean backbeat filtered through the hard rain of East London and then wash it all up on the shores of Perth, Western Australia. (If Dr Cuz can borrow, why can’t I?)
All of this makes the song quite the musical feat and, when With A Zed’s rap kicks in just after the one minute mark, you know that your ears are being cupped by something of a musical visionary. Dr Cuz brought everything he’s got to make this song.
Taking on the modern ills of capitalism and consumerism, Dr Cuz observes that ‘…half of all the wealth is owned by one per cent of the people’ while wondering whether it’s ‘…time for a maximum wage.’ It’s heady stuff and totally immediate in these times where Elon Musk is a political puppet master and Jeff Bezos pays off climate activists while getting married in a sinking city. What the good doctor is calling for here is a revolution — a quiet one — the kind of rebalancing that our planet and the people who inhabit it desperately need.
Realistically, that’s unlikely, but it’s good to see Dr Cuz maintain his place in the storied lineage of musicians who have used the times they live in to inspire songs that are not only great listening, but also tell it like it is. Whether people choose to listen, that’s another thing entirely. In a just world, they would listen in large numbers…
