Following up the release of her debut single, ‘Mind Reader’, Perth artist Jade Rich has just released her new offering, ‘Polite’.
A first listen suggests Rich must’ve been around for a while, as the 90s infused RnB of ‘Polite’ has greater maturity and stature than most sophomore offerings. Sure, Rich first came into our consciousness a few years ago under the name San Solis, but it’s more than that. ‘Polite’ has a gentle persistence that makes it a no brainer as a standout track for the upcoming summer. It’s smooth as and scratchy, too, sounding like it’s coming straight off a 12” slab of delicious retro vinyl.

But, and this is a biggie, Rich’s vocals and lyrics place it smack bang in the middle of the pantheon of 21st Century Aussie pop. This is a song about a woman who’s decided she’s going to take it no longer, she’s had enough, but, like we know we should in the 2020s, Rich is kicking against the pricks with all the subtle angst of a woman who knows the world is already hers for the taking. There’s no need to rage against the patriarchy anymore, for women like Rich, the battle is won.
That’s what I love so much about ‘Polite’, it’s told from the winning side of the argument. Sure, there will always be the idiot male who wants to get away with planting one on your lips in front of billions on the telly, but they’re a dying breed. In Rich’s world, they hardly exist.
‘Polite’ is a harbinger of the beginning of a new beginning, the quiet dominance that took Barbie to the gynaecologist. And the music is so, so sublime. In the future, there will be other songs like ‘Polite’, but Rich will always be able to claim she was one of the first.
